Spring Cleaning The Roof Checklist - Infographic

As the weather gets warmer and winter gives way to spring, many of us are undoubtedly looking forward to doing some spring cleaning. This is the perfect time to clean your roof that needs some attention too.

To help you, we have compiled this roof spring cleaning checklist:

Inspect the Roof

Shingles are your roof’s first line of defense and any damage is due to affect the roof.

Look out for the following:

  • Missing, broken, or cracked shingles –these weak spots provide passage for water to get into your house causing untold damage.
  • Blistering shingles – this happens due to moisture getting trapped in shingles.
  • Curling shingles – this occurs because of poor installation or ventilation.
  • Stained shingles – stained or streaked shingles indicate water leakage or damage to the roof’s ventilation system.

Ensure that these are dealt with as soon as they are noticed to save you time and money.

Trim Nearby Branches

Some of the biggest threats to your roof, believe it or not, are trees. Hanging branches and overgrown vegetation can threaten the integrity of your roof.

Tackle the Gutters

Cleaning out the rotting leaves, small twigs and branches, and other assorted debris from the gutter might seem like boring, thankless work but it’s crucial to maintaining the integrity of your roof.

Flashing & Chimney

Another thing you should look for is flashing around your chimney.

Check for Mold & Mildew

Mold and mildew are very dangerous for your health and the health of your roof. It’s important not to take any chances because if the mold has spread to the interior of your home it can be dangerous for you and your family.

Wash Away Dirt, Grime, and Growth

Dirt, grime, bird droppings, moss, and mildew can all compromise roofing material.

You may want to skip a pressure cleaner that could damage roofing shingles; a garden sprayer or hose will make do in most cases.

Remember To Check Inside The Attic As Well

Your roof inspection isn’t complete until you check your home’s interior. Go to the attic and check around for signs of leakage and water damage.
